Primitive organism that do not possess a mind are only capable of maintaining homoeostasis within themselves. The human capacity goes beyond the mere maintenance of homoeostasis. We are able to do so because we possess a mind which aids us in recollecting thoughts of past experiences and implement an action in a new situation based on passed results. If the outcome was positive then the human would be more likely to repeat that particular action however if the human had a negative outcome then they try their best to avoid it. This ability reduces the time it takes to make judgement calls which are key in survival situation and serves as a tool.
