I believe that Butt is insinuating that the rise of the expression of the "true self" is due to a change of discourse. Individuals are much more inclined to talk about their feelings as way to constructively deal with the issues that society presents. The more one leans away from Stoicism, the more we come to a place where the expression of the 'truest' part of ourselves is endorsed, and even encouraged. The construction for psychotherapy, whose aim is to modify behaviour, actually facillitated an end to the mean, allowing for a shift in the modes of thinking from the pre-industrial era to occur.
