Jung caught the attention of Freud for his creation of the word association test. During which the experimenter would read the patient a list of words, and record the word they associated with each word that was read and the time it took to think of this word. Jung worked with Freud to further develop the psychoanalytic field, including studies in dream analysis, until their separation due to personal differences. Jung continued work in psychoanalysis independently, and it was during this time that he developed one of the theories I find most interesting in psychology, the collective unconscious. The idea of the collective unconscious is that there is a series of different personalities that applies to every human being in their unconscious mind, these personalities are called archetypes. Jung's theory on archetypes has helped to develop personality psychology and has also been an inspiration for film makers and novelists. My favourite of the archetypes is the Shadow, similar to Freud's Id, the Shadow represents all of the latent basic instincts of human beings (eg. desires, repressed feelings).
