If the young boy's believe that their dirty socks hold good luck then they will put in the same amount of effort if not more, in the next game when they wear the same dirty socks causing them to probably play better. This is what might have caused the first boy who's parents didn't wash his socks to play good. However, since they believe the soap will wash away their good luck, then it will consequently make them feel less motivated and put in less effort in the next game causing them to play poorly. This is probably why the second boy did not play as well the second time. The placebo effect is a good way to analyze the situation because even though the dirty socks realistically did not help them play, their mindset about the socks did.
