The film Inception is a perfect example of the obsession with the unconscious in today's society. The premise of the movie is about changing the unconscious life of a certain individual, and that by implanting an idea into his unconscious, you can get him to unknowingly make a choice about something thinking he came to a conscious decisions about it. This movie also uses some of Freud's principles, because to get to the unconscious mind, you have to travel through the dreams of the person; just as Freud believed dreams were the "royal road" to the unconscious.
I think it is an appealing idea to the arts because it deals with something so personal to all of us, yet it is shrouded in mystery and excitement. It can also make for very interesting and creative stories, twisting the idea of the unconscious as a central plot theme. I believe academic psychologists are skeptical, because of the fact that psychology has moved away from being philosophical in nature, and turned to the scientific method to find evidence of psychological phenomenon. Academic psychologists are overwhelmingly causal in their practice of science, and because we cannot find any hard proof of the unconscious, they feel as though they have no reason to accept such an idea.

Yes great example. The unconscious in an element to the unknown making it interesting and exciting for the arts and at the same time cannot be measured concretely in psychology.
