While memory repression involves actively and purposely "forgetting" the memory of an event that had occurred, memory reconstruction is the unconscious change in the memory as it is being recalled. Loftus conducted studies that showed that by subtly implying suggestions when asking an individual to recall a certain event, the individual's memory of that event is influenced when taking that suggestion into account. For example, when a lawyer asks a witness if they saw "the" red car instead of "a" red car, the witness is more likely to say yes regardless of whether or not there actually was a red car. The individual's recall of an event is being reconstructed based on their present experience. This demonstrates the power of suggestion and the unreliability of memory.
