I think the placebo effect could help to explain their performance in the second game. The children believed they would do better in the second game with the dirty socks and underwear and their belief in the items resulted in a positive or negative outcome. The second child may have given up prior to the game starting because of the belief that the dirty clothing items that were needed for a better game were not present. The first child however, may have already thought of playing well again due to the clothing items not being washed. As a result, this child may have also taken additional steps to play better in the game. I think that the children’s belief in the items may also have caused the children to do other things to perform better or worse in the second game.
In this case, the placebo effect is a good way to analyze the situation. The outcome of the second game for the children depended on their belief in their dirty socks and underwear, the placebo. The children give meaning to the items and the meaning is important in determining the outcome.
