Even though in Shameless the unconscious process is not the main part of the show but it has a good example which I think has to do with the unconscious. The show is about a broken family living in the south side of Chicago. The south side is known to be rampart of poverty and crime. The family is raised by the eldest sister while the father is an alcoholic who he thinks is a good father who provides for his family. The main point I want to bring up is the eldest son who graduates high school and is the only character in the show who moves on to post secondary. He has so to speak has broken the unconscious process of growing up in the south side and becoming like everyone else in neighbourhood trying to make ends meet by various ways, like his father who is a known drunk and beggar of the neighbourhood. Your environment someone grows up in can affect the unconscious of the person and can direct the person on a likely path like other individuals of the similar environment. In Shameless we see the eldest son break free from this unconscious growth which could have occurred. The shoe does go on and does show even though he broke through he is still faced with the same challenges and eventually drops out of university.
I think psychologist have a tough time with the unconscious because it is something which is not tangible. It is something which I assume is hard to measure empirically. It is hard to study something which is cannot be defined by boundaries. The unconscious is just something that happens and it is hard to explain why.
