Explain how the double-blind procedure works in drug treatment studies. What kind of variables is the procedure designed to control for? How is the topic of double-blind procedure related to the topic of placebo effect?
The double-blind procedure in a drug test is one in which the participants as well as the researcher are unaware of which control group has the placebo or the drug being tested. As such sample group A and B are provided with matching drugs with the same directive as to how they are to be consumed, however neither the members of the sample groups or the researcher is aware of which group is taking the active drug versus which group is taking the placebo. Such a research is in place to control confounding variable, these are variables that are irrelevant to what is being studied. In this test that could be researchers bias or personality related variables. It also ensures that all members of the sample irrespective of the drug or lack of drug conform to the requirements of the research. Double blind procedure goes hand in hand with the placebo effect as it allows for better testing of the evidence of the placebo effect without the personal biases of the researcher affecting the validity of the study as such they are able to interpret the data as it is presented to them. As there are researcher who do not believe in the placebo effect as there are those who believe in it.
