For me, I would say that it is a placebo effect because in the first game both children believed that they won the game due to what they called their lucky socks, but in the second game since one of the parents disagreed about the child keeping the smelling socks for the next game, that parent could have washed the socks which could have caused that child to fail the game. This is basically saying that the placebo effect influences their performance in the sense they both believe that it was due to the sock that they had a good performance and not their individual skills. The placebo effect would not be a good way to analyze this situation because the both children are not focusing on the fact that it could be the fact that they their skills and experiences could have been what made them win the match in the first place.
