Hi all,
I hope everyones day is going well, it's the first day in PSYCH1010, which means by now we are all having a fabulous time reading 🙂
Thanks for reading this post, our group welcomes your questions, responses and feedback, we all will work together to respond accordingly.
Our group; Pauline, Cherise and Racelle have unanimously decided to complete question 4:
What are are some topics or ideas that you expect a student might hear about in a psychology course?
Which topics are you particularly interested in learning about ?
We all agreed Racism is certainly a topic we would expect to hear about in a psychology course.
In in the wake of Hurricane Irma, there has been great coverage and headlines have soared across our nations TV, Newspapers and internet about the devastating impact this violent act of nature has caused; buried homes, turned upside down cars, and have even fatally claimed the lives of over 20 people. It is quite sad and to those of us who have any families friends or even properties in the areas affected, I emphatically empathise with you.
However while viewing the news coverage on the aftermath Ive noticed that there have been a disparity of coverage between the American nations versus the Caribbean nations and even coverage on Cuba, with much coverage being on the former , particularly Miami and very little on the latter in comparison.
The question I ask, my fellow peers is , why is there a lack of representation in the latter regions, where lives were also affected and why was the news mainly focused on Miami ?
Perhaps it is due to what Moghaddem describes as "strong continuity in meaning systems"(11)
What are your views on this ?
How does this bias impact the mental health of the underrepresented groups ?
