As a child growing up, I've heard many parents using the placebo effect to get their kids to feel better in difficult situations. A very basic example is when you are running around the playground and get a scratch on your hand, your parents would kiss it saying it will make you better, which causes you to feel better. Personally, I've experienced it every time I went to the doctors to get a shot. I would tell myself that the needle won't hurt and man up, resulting in feeling no pain and not crying.
