I have played soccer for many years of my life so I can answer this question with some confidence. No I do not think the placebo effect takes place in this case. If it were a single player sport then yes I would think so but since it is a team sport it does not apply. The reason why the home field advantage works is because of the environment around you. You have the fans on your side and hearing people cheer you on rather than booing you will make you feel better and could very well make you play better.
