what role does conflict play in the Freudian unconscious, and what is the source of this conflict?
Because the Id is thought to embody our self centered desires and constant need for instant gratification, conflict arises when moral limitations are self-imposed by our superego which is representative of our value systems as derived from one's cultural surroundings. If a child had been scolded for actions considered to be socially taboo (such as those related to bodily pleasures), eventually that individual grows up with this ideal embedded within their unconscious. Therefore not only must they keep thier actions in check with societal norms, but they must also learn to scold themselves should these carnal desires persist. Ultimately this leads to an internal struggle, which may have positive or negative consequences.
what are some of the possible negative and positive outcomes to which the conflict can lead?
Positive outcome: Gaining a better understanding of the reality principle which acts to guide ones behavior while coping with delays in gratification Negative outcome: Developing anxiety through the constant denial of our desires may lead to repression, which can be damaging to ones mental health.
