Describe what Bartlett means by schema and provide an example of schema from your own experience. A schema is an active organization of past experiences stored in memory and provides individuals with knowledge of what to expect when they later experience same or similar situation. A framework for interpretation. An example of schema would be :
Going into the Library irrespective of where the library is one understand the manner in which they are expected to behave. Therefore we make an effort to be quiet and to be mindful of the other parties within the environment. What makes schema a cognitive concept rather than a behaviourist one? The schema is a cognitive concept because of its dependence on the memory processes, the mental process of categorizing and the retrieval processes of the brain. With each encounter, the we often think back to if it is something we have previously experience thus knowing how to function or we seek to observe and understand new experiences to later return to them when a similar situation arises.
