The study of twins helps us understand the nature-nurture controversy of intelligence because there are two individuals with identical sets of genes. Based on the theory that intelligence is hereditary, two people with exact same sets of genes should have the exact same intelligence. So, if we separate them and put them into two different environments they should both continue to have the same intelligence levels. However, if intelligence is more based on the environment, then the twins with identical gene sets should have different intelligence levels based on their environments. Twin studies allow us to explore these differences.
