TOTE stands for test, operate, test, exit. It can be used to explain a wide range of behaviours. It narrows the process down to the most basic action which is required to from a part of the behaviour. A plan is the behaviour in which some/many TOTE units combine to create. An application of TOTE is to form artificial intelligence. The researcher would programme many TOTE units and combine them into a single human behaviour.
An example on how TOTE units work would be walking to a destination via a footpath as the plan.
TOTE 1: Left leg
Lift the left foot above the ground, move it forward, then place it back on the ground in front of the right foot. Repeat the action, whilst following the footpath until faced with an obstacle, or the destination has been reached.
TOTE 2: Right leg
Lift the right foot above the ground, move it forward, then place it back on the ground in front of the left foot. Repeat the action, whilst following the footpath until faced with an obstacle, or the destination has been reached.
TOTE 3: Obstacle(a large object in the path)
If the obstacle requires evasion, react accordingly. Turn the body left or right whilst operating the left leg and right leg. Stop turning the body when the obstacle has been avoided.
TOTE 4: Obstacle(a hole/crack in the footpath)
Increase distance between the left leg and right leg whilst still in operation. Resume standard left leg/right leg operation when the obstacle has been avoided.
TOTE 5: Obstacle(traffic light)
Cease operation of the left leg and the right leg until signified that the left leg and right leg can resume operation.
