The zone of proximal development is the area where a person cannot solve the problem on their own, but can solve it when working collaboratively. The collaboration must involve scaffolding, which is when a collaborator helps the person without solving the problem for them. When a task is below the ZPD, it is too easy for the person. When the task is above the ZPD, the person cannot complete it, no matter how hard they try, or how much scaffolding they have, as it is very much above their skill level.
An example from my school life when a teacher gave me a problem above my ZPD would be in a high school maths class. I did not understand the basic concepts taught in the class, so when the course rapidly continued, I was completely lost and did not understand any new concepts. I did stay for after class for help understanding the concepts, but even though the teacher helped scaffold me, I still did not understand the concepts.
