A schema is a mental concept that informs a person about what to expect from a variety of experiences and situations. Schemas help us to interpret and understand the world. Children who are abused, mistreated or criticized often think they have done something bad to be mistreated or disrespected, even if the comments or physical abuse were not deserved. These children will grow up to think that they are not worthy and think very poorly of themselves and might grow up to believe that everyone will mistreat them. Another example can also be people who are socially isolated or alienated, can believe that they are very different from everyone else and that they will never be accepted or wanted.
