Eugenics and evolution
Explain what is meant by the idea of eugenics and why most people today find the concept offensive. How is it linked to the theory of evolution?
The idea of eugenics was a selective breeding of humans to increase or maintain intelligence level of human population. People today find the concept offensive, not because of the scientific method proposed by Galton but because what happened in the past. We are all too familiar with what Nazis were trying accomplish by sterilizing more than 400,000 people. This mass murder was based on the idea that they can erase the "unwanted" or "unworthy" genes by selectively targeting other race, prisoners and unhealthy individuals. To be clear, this was not Galton's idea. His idea was more closely related to the theory of evolution. Theory of evolution is a natural process in which beneficial genes survive/reproduce. Eugenics (proposed by Galton) and theory of evolution is linked because overtime, non-beneficial genes will disappear.
