An example of an appropriately chosen task is that we are expected, after studying Chapters 1-4 in statistics, to be able to calculate variance and standard deviance. With proper "scaffolding" and support we have the ability to learn how to calculate these. What puts it in our ZPD is that we have studied the chapters previous to Chapter 4 where we learned the basics necessary to understand the terms and notations used in these calculations.
An example of an inappropriately chose task would be if we studied Chapter 4 in statistics the first class. Even if the teacher was thorough in her explanation of the calculations, and provided tons of support, we would be missing the foundation needed to understand the terms involved. It would be above our ZPD.
