Zone of proximal Development should not be confused with the optimal learning zone. The optimal learning zone is the zone in which a individuals can develop alone.
Zone of proximal Development is a zone in which an individual is challenged with a task that they cannot complete on their own and need support. This support acts as a scaffold to guide and help the individual figure out the concept or develop the skill themselves. In simpler terms the zone is an area in which someone could not learn the thing on their own. For example, My math teacher gave me a problem we have not learned yet but it is a concept of putting previous chapters together. This question was in my ZPD because i had all the tools necessary to do it just did not know the order. The teacher tried and help me by asking questions to see what I have and what must be done (scaffolding) With this I was able to figure it out but only with the support of the teacher.
Another time a teacher gave me a task that was above my ZPD was when they told me I had to build a catapult. This has increased the difficulty because I have not built any object for some time. It was something brand new and I had no idea what was the right idea. I had to try and figure it out on my own without the support needed.
