ZDP

The Zone of Proximal Development is the difference between what a learner can do without help and what a learner can't do. In class, our professor sketched a number line on the board explaining that one could achieve 75% on their own; however, with help- they can get 95%. This is ZDP. In education, I would say that an inappropriate example of ZDP is when a teacher does not give support to the student. This can be done in many ways. In my experience, teachers tend to say things like "Read this 10 page article, write an essay on it, and hand it in by this day". Also, when it comes to assigning homework, if the task is too difficult for the student and the teacher then does the work for them, this is an ineffective way of teaching. In both cases, this is an example of a teacher choosing a task that is below the student's ZDP.
