The Strange situation was an experiment to see the attachment styles children had,
Long story short a kid with its mother would be in a room with toys, the kid plays, mother eventually leaves then a stranger walks in and stays for a while, mother comes back after some times...and maybe the kid gets a cookie
SO! Why is this important? WELL! We can see that different types of mothering styles affects the type of attachment which directly impacts behavior and development.
Thus attachment is a two way street, we have
secure attachments where the children would explore around with mom around and would be happy when mom come back
Insecure Avoidant...they just didn't care
Insecure Ambivolent, really sad when mom left, seemed mad when mom came back
The impact of such attachments are critical for children! Understaffed Romanian orphanages and thus overworked and most likely not the most affectionate people ever, had the children under perform cognitively and twice as likely to be super axicous in comparison to their well staffed counterparts.
This establishes the effects of attachment are not created equal, some attachments are healthy and thus should be encouraged, others unhealthy attachments that are strong precursors to mental health issues or behavioral problems which prior to this experiment were not convinced of in a objective scientific way!
Give you mom a hug everyone! or dad....or who ever...hugs are awesome okay?
