Displaced Aggression is directing anger and frustration towards and individual/group whom are unrelated to the source of anger. For example a father whom abuses his family because of his anger with his boss.
In regards to group cohesion, displaced aggression is often used by group leaders as a means to foster unity among a group of people. This can be used on many different scales, (us vs them) as we have seen throughout history. (Workplace/communal/national/religion,etc). Displaced aggression works by channeling the anger/discontent of group to a specific target, the unity is fostered through the cathartic experiences of venting displeasure and disapproval to another group.
For example, During WWII, the Nazi regime displaced aggression/frustrations they felt from poverty and the events of WWI onto innocent people. Rather then specifically target the perpetrators of injustice, civilian racial minorities such as Slavic peoples, ethnic Jews, etc were targeted as sources of the problem even though they may have been unrelated to the demise of Germany in the following years after WWI. This displaced aggression was vented through the use of imprisonment and killing.
