The zone of proximal development is where an individual can do a task or certain other things with the help of others and that they were unable to do on their own. The scaffolds are the individuals that are providing the support, however scaffolds can also be objects. Scaffolding is when a scaffold gives hints, and provides support to the individual in order for them to accomplish a certain task, for example tie their shoes. The scaffold does not do the task for the individual and instead provides support through reminders and hints.
The importance of scaffolding in development psychology is that it allows us to view that individuals can accomplish things they were unable to on their own, through some support from others. Individuals can receive support from others rather than not doing the task at all. It also provides an understanding of how children in schools can learn new and information they may find challenging. Also, it allows us to see how teachers can support the children for their benefit.
