A. Choose one of the three methods of personality assessment listed below and indicate what factors might limit its reliability and validity.
B. If you had to argue for the superiority of one of these methods over the others, which one would you choose and why?
1. self reports from the persons being assessed
2. reports from close friends and relatives of the person being assessed
3. observations of the person being assessed by a trained observer.
A. 1) Self Reports
There are many reasons why self reports are not the best way to look for information on the person being assessed. One reason may be that we may report ourselves in a more positive light than if someone else was observing us. The reason for this is that we always want to see ourselves in a more positive light and this also helps with our esteem. Another reason would be the self-perception theory. We only know ourselves through observation and because of this we might not know ourselves as well as we think we do. Another reason is that our perception is inaccurate even though we have inside access. Although it may seem like it is the most reasonable way to find out information about our personalities, it might actually be extremely flawed.
B. I think that if I had to say one is more superior than the other, it would be reports from close friends and family. The reason for this is that your friends and family would see you at different points in your life and will answer questions in a way that is less positive than if you were to do it yourself. Observations by a trained observer may not work because the assessed might start acting differently once they know they're being assessed. If a family member was assessing them, they may not even find out because of their closeness to them. In order to find the most accurate results, I think reports from friends and family would be the best way to figure out personality.
