In the idiographic approach, each individual is studied as a unique case. In the nomothetic approach, people are studied in groups to find general trends in the population. The idiographic approach allows for a more in-depth understanding of individuals which is important because human beings are so complex. However, a drawback to this approach is that studies would have to be conducted case by case which makes this area of research very labour intensive. The nomothetic approach allows us to explore universals which can be applied more broadly to individuals. Data from large populations can be taken to establish a pattern or trend. The nomothetic approach is both more atomistic and reductionist. In the study of personality, it attempts to reduce all facets of human characteristics into five main traits. The idiographic approach is more individualist because it focuses on each individual person and their differences in personality are taken into account to create a more tailored view of the individual.

So would you consider the idiographic approach to be atomistic or holistic?

An idiographic approach to studying personality is to view each individual separately as their own person. In other words, every individual is unique . For example, psychologist may use an informal interview or a an unstructured observation to assess. personality. Whereas, the nomothetic approach to view personality is that personality is explored among large samples of people to find universal laws. For example, looking at the right personality dimensions to use, as suggested by the researcher in China. She found that in China the Big Five model is not sufficient as she finds it misses the dimension of interpersonal relatedness, which deals with how we relate to others(harmony and saving face).
