a. Self reports are often the most unreliable and least valid source to consult because as people, we are often more likely to portray ourselves in the most positive light. We are more likely to lie and say that we exercise or read or even study more than we actually do because we have a skewed perception. The often also play into our level of self-esteem which can be another factor that affects validity. A person with low self esteem is more likely to evaluate themselves more harshly, saying that they do the wrong thing more often than they actually do, or the opposite where a person believes that they do the right thing more often than they actually do. The is a great personal flaw that we often deal with and must account for.
b. I would probably argue that the most reliable method would be reports from friends and family. When reporting on yourself, you’re more likely to not tell the whole truth or exaggerate your strengths, or possibly your flaws. A friend or your family are possibly more likely to see you from a more neutral standpoint and provide s more accurate report. Observation done by a trained professional may be the least reliable as a person may not act as naturally as they would with people they’re familiar with. Testing often happens in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people doing unfamiliar tasks that a person knows they are being evaluated on. Based on their feelings towards this, they may give inaccurate answers or act unnaturally in this situation, affecting the outcomes. A person who is more familiar with them are in a better position to know what makes them comfortable and get more accurate results.
