Self Reports Factors limiting Reliability: Self reports are not always consistent as depending on one's mood a person may answer questions of how people view them or how they view themselves differently one day from the next. Even if the answers are consistent, there is not guarantee that they are valid. Validity would depend on how much insight the person has as well as their level of honesty while answering.
I believe that despite the limitations, self reports are still the most reliable and valid method of assessment of personality. Ideally a combination of self-reports and observations from a trained observer would be ideal as the individual observing may be able to bring new meaning to how the individual views themselves. If this combination is not possible, I would use self-reports as the individual themselves is the most likely person to have the most insight into their own feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.

Could you think of any reasons why a self-report may not accurately tell us something about one's personality?
