The "Rouge test" : a red dot was 'placed' on the infants' nose in front of a mirror. They were observed. The infants (18+ months old) were able to recognize the dot , meaning they have a sense of awareness of the self and their surroundings - others. The were able to indicate or follow the dot. The test was reliable but validity can be controversial. Just because an infant did recognize the dot , does not mean the infant is fully aware of his "self" . Likewise, just because an infant did not, does not indicate that they lack awareness of the "self".
