The discomfort of Milgram's students engaged in the subway research project demonstrated the importance of norms in human behaviours, as the students tried to pretend they had an excuse for asking for the person's seat (ex- faking illness) in order to better adjust their situation to fit in with the norms of society. Similar to why so many different religions existence, societal norms give humans a sense of belonging and guidance. Without that security, we become awkward or uncomfortable, because there are no expectations of what we should be doing. An example of another situation that a researcher might use is getting a group of young adults to ask other people to pay for their ticket.
