"Our self-perceptions have social origins and that they are arrived in relativistic terms" means as a society, we are all in similar in a sense that we know or have a sense of what the "norm" is, but at the same time society can depict what is the norm. If we live life by conforming to social norms then our self-perceptions have social origins. In most cases if you conform to social norms you will have a good self-perception. We also judge people in a way that society feels about certain individuals because they may or may not be conforming to the social norms. For example, someone might judge someone who works a job that requires no education because the social norm in north america is to go to college or university, receive an education, and after you graduate apply that knowledge in your career.
