The difference between sex and gender is that sex is biological where as gender is more cultural. The relevance of this distinction to psychology is that gender can be looked at from a more normative approach due to the social construction and norms made about gender. Where as sex can be looked at more from a causal perspective, depending on the chromosomes (sex chromosome)that each parent passes down to their child (chromosomes: xx:girl, xy:boy) will determine the sex of the child. gender identities are constructed because of the amount of social construction and norms that take place within the culture that as a result give roles to males ( bread winners) and females (house wives/ keepers).
