The concept of the looking glass self is that society and others will shape the way we see ourselves. It assumes that our perception of ourselves are situational dependent and flexible. We can change our views on ourselves based on ques and feedback we receive from others in society. I was a competitive swimmer until my late teens and I remember a time when I was at a meet and performed very poorly on a race. This effected my mood and performance the rest of the weekend due to lack of confidence and perceiving myself as a terrible swimmer. My dad pulled me aside before the last day of races and told me that I was amazing and that i was only having an "off weekend". He told me that I needed to believe in myself more if i wanted to perform better. Him telling me that i was amazing made be believe that i was amazing- my self perception changed based on his perception of me. This example shows that i was able to change the view of myself based on feedback that i received and was able to change my behavior based on the change in my self perception. For the record, i did very well on my last day of the meet Michelle!
