Norms are patterns of the correct way to behave. Norms on how prisoners, guards and even the warden behaves are involved in the Zimbardo prison research. As the study started, the students took on the roles that they were assigned and started to behave based on the norms of the specific roles. The behaviour of the prisoners was based on the norms of how prisoners tend to behave and the guards on the norms of how guards behave. For example, the guards for the most part behaved unfairly towards the prisoners to keep order in the prison. Obedience is involved as there is conformity to an authority, in this case the guards are listening to the warden and the prisoners to the guards. Obedience is expected in this case as otherwise the prisoners could manage to escape the prison and the guards would not be doing their job. I think that the behaviour of the participants was to some extent predictable from the other two studies. From Asch’s study, it can be determined that people will conform and follow the norms in order to be a part of a group. From, Milgram’s study, it can be seen that there is obedience to a person in a higher position, as there was from the participants delivering the shocks to the researcher. Most individuals tend to want to fit in with the group, and thus conform to norms and listen to an authority figure.
