Distinction between conversion and compliance

Moscovici's distinction between conversion and compliance is that when an individual is compliant, they assume the attitude of a group norm but privately reject this group norm, whereas in the case of conversion, there is more internalization of the ideal for the individual and they accept the group norm in both public and private settings. An example of a time when I was compliant with a group norm, was in high school when a friend of mine was dating an individual who I privately thought did not have a lot of integrity and was not the right person for my friend. I, however, seeing that my other friends accepted my new friend's boyfriend, did not express this opinion in the group setting and I would act as if I was accepting of him and their relationship. While still having these private reservations about her dating him. An example of me converting to a group norm was also in high school, I started to spend time with a group of people who exhibited more deviant behaviour and rejecting my previous behaviour of being very focused on my studies. My childhood friends, seeing this change in my behaviours, confronted me and convinced me that I should spend more time with them and get back to focusing on what was important for me. Even though I did enjoy spending time with my other group of friends, after this confrontation I was convinced to change my behaviour to join my group of childhood friends and also to internalize the opinion that this would be better for my life goals.
