The looking-glass self is a theory stating that a person grows out and develops based on social interactions and how others view you.
My brother is a huge fan of basketball and was part of the basketball team in high school. During his sophmore year (grade 11) during practise a part of his bone on his ankle broke off which resulted in him needing surgery and not being able walk for about 2 months. He missed most of the season and the surgeon told him he most likely wouldn't be able to play basketball, having this said my brother thought that he would never be able to play again. His friends, team players , his coach and our family members never let him see it that way and we kept pushing him telling him he was a great player, a good player, a strong person, and overall motivating him which actually resulted in his recovery to be alot faster and he slowly started to play and was able to play for the last game of the season.
