I would argue that the rouge test could be considered reliable because it is an effective way to see if a young child can recognize themselves in a mirror with the rouge acting as a deterrent of familiarity ( as the child has never seen themselves in this way, and it is even challenged if they could recognize themselves at all at this stage in their development). By extension, these results can be see as reliable because the response from the participating children was similar across the board. However, I would say that the results are also invalid because the results are not falsifiable, because the child is too young to communicate their thinking.The mirror does play a role because the child also may not be aware of the purpose of a mirror and therefore may not have the context that the person staring back at them is actually a reflection of themselves.
