What is the difference between the concept of sex and the concept of gender? What is the relevance of this distinction to Psychologists? What does it mean to say that “gender identities are constructed” (M p264)?
"Sex" applies to ones biological make up based on the reproductive organs they posses. "gender" refers to ones identity and in some sense sexual orientation. Sex is male or female while Gender is boy or girl. One cannot chose their sex while they can chose their gender.
The idea of gender is an interesting topic to study psychologically because, unlike sex, it is up to the individual which personality traits and forms of expression they will take on.
gender identities are constructed just like most human behaviours. Generally one is not born with gender.. gender norms and social pressures make up someones gender identity.
