Self Reports
Factors limiting Reliability:
Self reports may not always be truthful
May be exaggerated
May not be as consistent
Participant may become lazy
Participant may not be able to record/ collect data properly
Validity depends on :
How much a person cares for the subject matter
How much insight one has
Honesty
Consistency
Despite limitations, self reports in my opinion are the most reliable and the a valid method of assessment of personality. This is because we tend to act a certain way when we know we are being observed/ assessed. Due to this, participants may choose to act a certain way and display a specific persona for the observation. Due to this, gaining realistic data is highly unlikely. Self reports allow the participant to answer all questions privately and have some sort of confidentiality. I feel self reports are also taken more seriously and would allow for more rich data results.
