After asking few questions in class, I've come to conclusion than Milgram study cannot be called an experiment, because there are no independent variables in it. The researcher and the "student" in the study follow their predetermined roles and therefore are not independent. The participant's behavior is based on the behavior of researcher and the "student" and therefore is not independent as well. The Zimbardo study cannot be technically called an experiment too. There were no controls in it and the Zimbardo himself became a participant, instead of remaining to be an observer of his study.

wouldnt the proximity of the authoritative figure in the milgram study be viewed as an independent variable?
Also can you think of any controls that were used in these studies
