Sex refers to the biological differences in individuals due to chromosomes, hormones, and external and internal organs. Gender is associated with one's identity and is constructed by the social and cultural differences. One can choose to refer to themselves as a specific gender, however sex is something you are born with.
Gender is a psychological phenomenon that is intriguing to study because it strikes the nature vs nurture debate. Psychologists are interested in finding out whether the behavior of one is dependent on their biological makeup or due to the nurturing and environmental factors.
Gender roles/expectations begin to form and are instilled in individuals as early as the infancy stage of life Girls are dressed in colors such as pink, purple etc whereas baby boys are dressed in blue, black. Parents/caregivers begin setting out expectations to their children ( for example, girls are told to play with dolls and boys are told to play with toy cars).
