Certain words or phrases can come to have constructed meanings which are different than the original meaning of the word/phrase. For example "catching Z's", taken in it's literal, original context it makes no sense but we have constructed an agreed upon meaning of the phrase and now know it to mean "sleeping". It would be problematic to say it to someone learning English, or to direct translate it into another language as it only has this meaning in north american culture.
