These policies are important for psychology since they affect the changes in the behavior of individuals within society that consists of different cultural groups.
The biggest difference between assimilation policies and multiculturalism policies is in their approach toward solving culture-related issues within society. Assimilation approach implies that minority groups are expected and encouraged to shift from their native cultural identity to the culture of the majority. Assimilation policies are aiming at solving inter-group prejudice and aggression by the attempt to create one cultural group out of many. Multiculturalism, on the other hand, is based on acceptance and encouragement of different cultures, allowing minorities to keep their native culture. When it comes to inter-group issues, multiculturalism is making an effort to maintain peaceful coexistence between majority groups and the minorities by emphasizing on a dialogue and multicultural hypothesis.
