Damasio says that some emotions are innate, while others are not. For example, some we feel regardless of any exposure to them in a new environment, such as happiness when we see someone we love. However, other emotions such as fear need to be triggered or paired with someone's reactions to a stimulus - for example, with the emotion of fear, a child learns to show fear when a dog is near because when the first dog came around the mother reacted in a fearful way which triggered the fear emotion in the child. From now on the child will show fear whenever a dog is present, without really knowing why.

Hi,
Nice summary of the point the Damasio talked about. According to Damasio why would the child fear the dog?
Thanks Ali
