Damasio states that although emotions are innate, in certain instances they do require a certain trigger to set them off. Using an example from class an infant monkey saw an adult monkey being afraid of snakes and learned to be afraid of snakes. The adult monkey being afraid set off a trigger which resulted in innate emotions of fear in the infant monkey. Although not all emotions require triggers, some do, yet they are still classified as innate.

So if emotions aren't entirely innate - what else are they according to Damasio?
