The body state refers to the process in which parts of the body operate when emotion is in effect. An example of this is when the glucose level in the blood stream depletes, which signals the emotion of hunger.
A body map is when an area of the brain maps out the information relating to the current body state. Feelings are formed from body maps. An example of this would be the feeling of fear. The body state would change which would affect the respiratory system by increased breathing rate and an increase in blood pumping around the body, it would affect the muscular system by constricting the muscles, as well as affecting many other parts of the body. The area of the brain will receive this information, and the organism will feel fear.
A false body map can also be created in a time which the organism is in danger. For example, the organism has been attacked by a predator which resulted in a large gash on the organism’s arm, the organism now has to run away from the danger which, in a wooded area, would result in many cuts from the tree branches. The body state communicates to the area of the brain that the arm is in extreme pain, as well as pain in various areas due to the cuts. The body map does not transfer the information of pain, as it would not be beneficial to the survival of the organism, but the organism will feel the pain at a later, less crucial time.
