Some of the requirements that Damasio suggests that an organism must meet in order to experience feelings involve having a nervous system that is able to map body structures and states, a complex brain and consciousness. There needs to be a transformation of the neural patterns in the body maps and structures into mental images. Also, that the brain has to become aware of another change in the brain. The brain not only leads to evoking feeling but having the feeling, thus the brain being complex. An organism needs to have a body and also a way to show the body in itself. Essentially, the organism needs to be able to be conscious of a feeling. The organism needs to be aware of the contents of a feeling. These requirements represent a connection between feelings and evolution because feeling came about due to evolution and not every organism has them. Feelings are there for our benefit, the goal of evolution, as we are able to recognize our body state. Also, we would not have feelings if we did not have brain machinery that is needed to regulate the body and without the machinery we would not have emotions and thus feelings.
