The body state is the body's direct response to external stimuli, for example if a person stubs their toe on a desk. The pain would then trigger a response that would travel through the nervous system eventually reaching the cerebral cortex and would then inhibit an emotional response of feelings (eg. the person is angry because they were in the middle of walking across the room and stubbed their toe). The travelling of the nervous system response to the cerebral cortex is the "body map". The difference that Damasio states between the body state and the body map is that feelings are associated with the body map.
